Description

AlcoScreen® Saliva Alcohol Test Strips, CLIA Waived, 24/Box

AlcoScreen Logo CLIA Waived

ALCO-SCREEN® is a semi-quantitative screening test used to estimate the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) using human saliva. The test strip estimates BAC at the 0.00%, 0.02%, 0.04%, 0.08% and 0.3% levels. Results are used in the diagnosis of alcohol use or intoxication.

Alco-Screen® is a rapid, highly sensitive method to detect the presence of alcohol in saliva and provide an approximation of relative blood alcohol concentration. Since it is well established that the concentration of alcohol in saliva is very close to that in the blood, saliva is the preferred specimen for alcohol testing, allowing for greater detection sensitivity than breath testing methods. Alco-Screen® is a simple, one-step, 2 minute test that requires no instrumentation, calibration or special training to be used effectively. It is convenient enough to be used any time, and in any place.

Alco-Screen® is FDA 510(k) cleared for home use and is a CLIA-Waived testing device. Inappropriate consumption of alcohol can be a problem in many family, occupational, institutional and safety sensitive situations. Alco-Screen® is an easy yet effective tool for identifying alcohol consumption. Alco-Screen® can be used as a cost effective way to help minimize the risks associated with inappropriate alcohol consumption.

Alcohol Testing: Importance in Schools and Workplaces

Alcohol, though legal, poses significant risks to health and public safety when abused. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol misuse in the workplace leads to decreased productivity, workplace injuries, and increased absenteeism. Similarly, in educational environments, alcohol abuse can significantly affect academic performance and social behavior.

This alcohol test is particularly popular for use in schools as it not only measures an individual’s blood alcohol level but can also detect the presence of alcohol in other beverages, making it versatile for various applications.

Product Overview

AlcoScreen is a highly accurate saliva test that allows you to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) conveniently at home. The concentration of alcohol in saliva closely mirrors that of blood, making this test both effective and dependable. By saturating the test strip with saliva, you can quickly determine your BAC based on the color change of the strip, which corresponds to levels of 0.02%, 0.04%, 0.08%, and 0.30%.

Key Features

  1. High Accuracy: AlcoScreen provides precise BAC readings, critical for determining impairment levels. It accurately measures BAC at 0.02%, 0.04%, 0.08%, and 0.30%, the latter being a life-threatening level.
  2. Versatile Usage: Besides measuring BAC, AlcoScreen can detect alcohol presence in other fluids. This feature is particularly useful for parents, school counselors, coaches, employers, and other supervisors who need to identify concealed alcohol use.
  3. Easy to Use: Simply saturate the reactive pad with saliva, wait two minutes, and compare the color change to the provided chart for your BAC level.

Practical Applications

  • Workplace Safety: Employers can use AlcoScreen to ensure a safe working environment, as alcohol impairment can significantly reduce productivity and increase the risk of accidents.
  • School Monitoring: School counselors and coaches can utilize AlcoScreen to monitor students and prevent alcohol abuse, promoting a healthier and safer academic environment.
  • Parental Control: Parents can easily check if their children are consuming alcohol, ensuring their safety and well-being.

AlcoScreen® Alcohol Strip Test Instructions

1. Important Notes before You Begin:

Abstain from placing anything in the mouth for fifteen (15) minutes prior to starting the test. This includes non-alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, coffee, breath mints, food, etc.

2. Preparation:

  • Open the foil package and remove the alcohol test strip.
  • Observe the reactive pad on the end of the test strip. The pad should be a light cream color.
  • Discard any test strip with a reagent pad that is dark tan in color or otherwise discolored.

3. Collecting the Sample:

  • Saturate the reactive pad with saliva from the mouth or sputum cup.
  • Immediately start the timer.

4. Observing the Results:

  • At two (2) minutes, observe the color change (if any) in the reactive pad.
  • A color change of green or blue indicates the presence of alcohol and a positive result.
  • Results obtained after more than 2 minutes and 30 seconds may be erroneous.

5. Interpreting the Results:

Estimate the approximate blood alcohol concentration by comparing the color of the reagent pad with the color chart on the test package.

Results

Positive Result:

  • The AlcoScreen alcohol test produces a color change in the presence of saliva alcohol, ranging from a light green-gray color at 0.02% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to a dark blue-gray color near 0.30% BAC.
  • Color blocks are provided within this range to allow an approximation of BAC.
  • AlcoScreen may also produce colors that appear to be between adjacent color blocks.
  • A green color lighter than the 0.02% color block should be interpreted as positive for the presence of alcohol in saliva, but at less than the 0.02% level of BAC.

Negative Result:

  • If the reagent pad shows no color change (remaining white or cream-colored), it should be interpreted as a negative result (meaning no alcohol present).
  • If the outer edges of the reagent pad produce a slight color change but the majority of the pad remains colorless, repeat the test to ensure complete saturation of the reagent pad with saliva.
  • If the second result is the same, interpret the results as negative (no alcohol present).
